WGC v Hampshire Captains

Wiltshire captains arrived at the splendid clubhouse of the Royal Winchester Golf Club on a day not promising a surfeit of sun.

 

Following the usual warm welcome by the host club captain, many of the team took the opportunity to view from the balcony the 18th. Green with its unusual deeply sunken approach bunker, a hazard subsequently visited by several Wiltshire Captains!

The course was in very good condition with several especially challenging holes notably the 10th. The golf was greatly enjoyed by all, but sadly for Wiltshire the local knowledge of the Hampshire captains prevailed in the end.

The final result was a win by Hampshire 6 -2 announced by WGC Captain Tom Sherry in his entertaining after dinner speech.

The two matches won by WGC included the pairings of David Walker  (Upavon) with Dick Solomon (Ogbourne Down), and June Pofley (North Wilts) with Neil Black (Erlstoke Sands).

27th June 2012 will go down in WGC history as the first match in which a lady captain (June Pofley) participated. June it should be noted, looked the part, wearing her smart green cravat embroidered with our white horse logo.
