It was a most enjoyable occasion having been meticulously planned by John. The course was in superb condition and apart from the odd sprinkling of rain we got round in good weather. The food was excellent and promptly served so the far-travelling guests could get away at a reasonable time. The match was marked by the usual bonhomie, much banter and a warm, companiable atmosphere prevailed.

The WGC team was well balanced, like the Devon Captains, with a range of handicaps including four or five single-figure handicappers. My recollection of matches against Devon is they have always been tough encounters and on this occasion they came bearing the trophy they won last year. However, the Wiltshire boys prevailed to win 5 - 3, losing only one game, halving 4 and winning 3.

There was much chat at the 19th hole with tales of the Devon pair in match 5 coming back from 5 down to halve the game. Match 7 with Paul Symes of Tidworth and Barry Norridge of Marlborough were 3 down but rallied strongly to win 2 & 1. Devon's Captain of last year, Mike Angelos, with his partner, Bob Naish, was one down as they teed off on the 17th. Mike hit a good drive then took an 8 iron to put the ball in the hole for an eagle.

Not to be outdone, Terry Broom of Cumberwell Park, playing with Irwin Brohier, knocked in a birdie on the 18th to win the game - wow! The WGC Captain putting well but doing littlel else had the good fortune to be partnered by David Clutson, the Tidworth Captain, in a hard-fought match with nothing more than one hole in it.  The Devon Captain, Mike Penlington and his partner, Brian Harris, went down the last hole one up but as on many holes, David got the par with a 30 foot putt to win the hole and halve the game - well done, sir!
