West of England Captains Inter County Championship

SAUNTON GOLF

On Thursday 5th April 2012 one hundred and forty four Captains and Past Captains arrived at Saunton for the inaugural West of England Captains Inter County Championship representing Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire.

Teams of twenty four members of each of the respective County Captains’ Associations competed in the betterball stableford event with six pairs on each of Saunton’s East and West courses.

The Saunton restaurant was set for six tables of twenty four to maintain the teams’ camaraderie and unique environment and, after the championship dinner, the Saunton Chairman, Dr Richard Beer, proposed the Loyal Toast.

Current Saunton Captain, Dr Danny Wallace, extended a warm welcome to everyone with special mention of the gourmet dinner and, after last week’s brief summer interlude, the sharp contrast in weather conditions.

John Rich, the Cornwall Captain, responded on behalf of the visitors and with particular reference to the opportunity for all six counties competing together and the obvious reasons for ensuring the continuity of the event at Saunton in future years.

After the presentations the winning County Captain, Mike Angelos, thanked all concerned for a very special day and looked forward to seeing everyone again next year.

During the ongoing conversations it was clear quite a number of the longer distanced competitors had taken the opportunity, with their wives and families, to extend their stay in North Devon and enjoy the local hostelries and leisure facilities.
