Match v Devon Captains

 at Yelverton Golf Club,

30th May 2013

Despite a late drop out we did finally manage to field a full side, in no short measure thanks to Geoff Titt who stepped in at the last minute to complete the team. We owe Geoff our sincere and heartfelt thanks.

With the team complete we set off from various sites in Wiltshire on a dull dreary and wet morning. However we arrived at Yelverton (6 miles North of Plymouth for those of you, like me, who had not heard of the club before) in bright sunshine that would remain throughout the day along with a fairly brisk breeze.

After a nice lunch and the usual pleasantries the match pairs were announced and we set off to do battle with the merry men of Devon.

The course was very pleasant with spectacular views of Dartmoor and although not overly long by today’s standards it was a real challenge particularly when playing into the wind.

Such a beautiful location on the edge of Dartmoor has its own challenges particularly when allowing for the local wildlife as one of the local rules demonstrates, “ if a ball lies on the putting green and is in contact with animal hoof marks, bites, manure or urine burns, relief may be taken etc etc”.

Well battle we did and I am afraid to say that the result did not go in our favour to say the least. I am sorry to report that we were whitewashed losing all eight matches. The first time in my experience that we have had such a poor result.

After the match we had a very nice dinner and after the usual pleasantries we headed off home, which in my case was 170 miles away.

Many thanks to Devon for there hospitality and many thanks to the Wiltshire team for there efforts on the day particularly Geoff Titt who stepped in as a late replacement and David Wakley would was good enough to drive me.
