WGC v Sussex

On arrival at High Post, we were sorry to hear that WGC Captain Bill Hartley was unable to make this match owing to his wife’s ill health. We wish her a speedy recovery and that Bill will be back at our helm in the near future.

Fortunately, last year’s WGC Captain, Steve Griffiths, was on hand to take over the team captaincy for the match.

It was a bit cloudy as we gathered for lunch before proceedings commenced, as ever, at one o’clock. The Sussex boys were in confident mood, having played the course the day before and staying the night in The Stones Hotel just across the road.

Captain Steve and his partner, High Post Club Captain Colin Bell, were clearly determined to set an example for the rest of team and, after a bit of a battle with Sussex Captain David and Match Secretary Mark, ran out comfortable winners.

The next three matches all resulted in fairly heavy wins for WGC before our first match setback. However, any worries about a Sussex comeback were quickly nipped in the bud with a further two wins before the last match was halved following a last ditch rally by the WGC boys.

We were fortunate that as the day progressed, the weather got better and better and, allied to a course that played beautifully, there was some very good scoring.

After the customary pre-dinner refreshments, we were served with a lovely meal accompanied by superb service before Steve and David gave us their reflections on the day’s play and the ongoing value of the friendships created with our good friends from Sussex.

WGC departed back to home territories while Sussex walked back to the hotel to drown their sorrows before getting ready for their match against Somerset the following day at Orchardleigh. We look forward to renewing the contest at Lewes in 2016.

Jim Murdoch, Match Secretary
