Wiltshire Captains Versus Sussex Captains at Pyecombe Golf Club

Thursday 4th September 2014

Well another match over and I am pleased to say a great win for Wiltshire.

We won 6.5 to 1.5 on a fairly tricky hilly course which although not very long did present some interesting challenges and provided some fantastic views of the South Downs.

Pyecombe and the Sussex Captains were very welcoming and provided great hospitality throughout the day.

Our team was eventually finalised with three days to spare and despite having gone through all of the reserves and almost all of the spare bids the full team arrived in good time for the match.

I believe it is fair to say that the Sussex Captains were fairly confident and do not lose many matches at home. Our win was made all the more significant as we were reminded that prior to this match we have only beaten them 4 times in the past with another 3 matches being drawn since the inception of this fixture in 1998.

Mention must be made of our Captain Steve Griffiths who worked wonders again with his driving Iron much to the amazement and consternation of the Sussex Captain, Ian Wood. The language used by Ian to describe Steve’s exploits was colourful and flowery as only an expatriate Yorkshire man can provide.

Finally I would like to say a great thank you to all the Wiltshire team who made the long Journey to Sussex and performed so magnificently to provide us with such a convincing win.

Match Secretary.
