WGC v Sussex

Thursday 25th August

This was a fixture some distance for many members of the team to travel. Located in East Sussex it overlooks Lewes on top of the chalk hills. Access was the first encounter for our team as they negotiated a very narrow Chapel Hill in their cars (scraping tyres and alloys against the kerb) up to the club car park.

However, once parked they could take in the views on a gloriously sunny day! Lewes Golf Club was built in 1896 and with such views comes a course designed to follow and cross the contours to the highest point near the 8th green.

Picturesque views of the South Downs National Park and the South Weald  and from the 7th green which looks down over Glyne, the home of the Glynbourne Operas. So the views were stunning, the weather superb but the golf may have been good but the result did not reflect all the features of this lovely area!

The team travelled with only fifteen players and the Captain, opted to play by himself allowing the rest of team to have a fairer challenge. He did well on the front nine turning just two down but in the heat and pressure succumbed at the 15th.

Although there were two heavy loses, two of the five  remaining pairs lost on the 18th , two halved and the final pairing of the outgoing Hamptworth Club rep and the new rep (and Match Secretary for the fixture) managed an excellent and only win on their final hole.

The applause was rapturous as the final hole was conceded by Sussex in front of those enjoying their post-match drink on the club house terrace!
