Wiltshire Golf Captains v Devon Golf Captains – 24th May 2016

The joys of playing golf at Salisbury and South Wilts in May!  The golfing omens were good from the start, with perfect playing conditions for golf; well presented golf course, great weather - warm, sunny and very little wind that culminated in a decisive victory for the WGC.  The final tally was that WGC won the first 7 matches and narrowly lost the last match on the 18th green.

The victory may have seemed one sided but I can assure you that Devon were up for the match.  They arrived early and were well hydrated even before the majority of WGC members arrived.  Once everyone had gathered and old acquaintances made, all participated in a light lunch followed by the announcement of the pairings with all eager for starters orders at 1300 hours.

Our Captain John Hawley, partnered by Eric Lewis led from the front and managed to pull off a fantastic 6&4 victory against the Devon pairing of Captain Mike Badcock and Adam Nicol. Not to be out down by the Captain, the 2nd pairing of Alan Kerr and Mark Symonds and 6th pairing of Dick Soloman and Gordon Blagbrough won their respective matches 6&5.  There were also good wins for 3rd pairing of Jim Gould and Ron East, 5th paring of Steve Dumbleton and Ron Welsby, 7th pairing of Steve Powers and Ian Vincent – all winning 2&1.

That only leaves 2 matches to comment on - winning by a margin of 3&2 were the 4th pairing of Andy Norris and Bob Holman. Unfortunately, our 8th and final pairing of Robin Kingston and Graham Morgan came a very close second by loosing the final hole – it could be said that they were gentlemen and allowed our opposition to make their way home with at least one win.

In time honored tradition when all matches are finished, we all adjourned to the 19th hole to partake in a soft drink or two followed by an excellent meal served by Sarah and her staff and much banter and `if only`stories.  The closing speeches post coffee was led by our very own Wilshire Captain John Hawley who of course told a joke or two, followed by Devon Captain Mike Badcock who had the unenviable task of reading out the result.

A great day was had by all.
