Six Counties Match at Saunton Sands GC

Report from Saunton Golf Club

On Thursday 4th April 2013, one hundred and forty four Captains and Past Captains arrived at Saunton for the annual Inter County Team Championship.

All six West of England Counties namely; Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire were each represented by twenty four players from their respective County Captains and Past Captains Associations.

The competition is a Stableford better ball event with each team divided into six pairs on each of Saunton’s East and West courses.

This year’s continual extremes of weather again played a part with a strong and very cold Easterly wind making conditions very difficult reflected by the below average scoring.

However, despite the adverse weather the Devon team, led by Mike Penlington, retained the trophy by a sizeable margin of twenty nine points although, as is usual in a better ball event, the next four teams were only separated by six points.

Once again, when meeting old friends, the clubhouse camaraderie was enhanced by a four course gourmet dinner and the obligatory Rioja.

The Winning Devon Team

Report from our Captain - Tony Leach

Dear All,

As you know it was an absolutely great course and super day.  Wiltshire may have come one place higher than last year but that was almost entirely due to J. DONALD & S. KELLEY  who won the prize for an amazing best 2 ball Stableford score of 42 points in very strong wind on this tricky links course. This included 2 twos, one of which was on quite a long par 4!.  I don’t have their e-mails but if you know how I can pass on my thanks and congratulations to then , would you let me know or forward this directly on to them.

Shame they are both barred from playing next year, but with a Captain like Steve and a keen new Moonrakers team,  I’m sure we’ll continue our progress up the leader board.

Regards Tony
