6 Counties at SAUNTON SANDS Golf Club

On Thursday 3rd April 2014 one hundred and forty four Captains and Past Captains arrived at Saunton Golf Club to represent their respective Counties in the West of England Inter County Championship.

The Counties of Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire each had a team of twenty four current or past club Captains involved in a betterball stableford event with all cards to count for the County score.

The forecast of steady rain all day proved to be accurate but spirits and camaraderie was not dampened with scoring surprisingly good and, as usual, very close considering the team size.

The day was also enhanced by a hole in one from Ian Wood of Wiltshire whose driver off the tee on the eleventh hole on the West course earned a valuable five points together with thirty six golf balls, a bottle of Bells whisky and the prized hole in one certificate. A day to remember for Ian!

All competitors enjoyed the ambience of the new Saunton lounge and restaurant areas and dinner was followed by the traditional welcome from the Saunton Captain, Tony Summers and an equally warm response from the Dorset Captain, Derek Grimes.
